AI for Nonprofits in South Africa
A practical, POPIA-aware guide for NGOs working with limited budgets and eleven official languages.
Why the global AI guides don't fit
Most "AI for nonprofits" content assumes a US 501(c)(3) with a comms team and a SaaS budget. South African NGOs work in multiple languages, under POPIA, and with communities whose consent to being photographed does not extend to being processed by an American language model. This guide translates the same 4D framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence — into South African practice.
POPIA and AI: the short version
- Do not paste identifiable beneficiary data (names, ID numbers, photos, case notes) into public AI chatbots.
- Get explicit, informed consent that mentions AI processing — general media consent is not enough.
- Publish an AI-use statement on your website so donors and community know what you do and don't automate.
- Appoint an information officer if you haven't — POPIA requires it whether you use AI or not.
Multilingual comms: AI's real superpower here
Translation between English and isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, Sepedi and Xitsonga is where AI earns its keep for South African NGOs. It won't be perfect — always have a mother-tongue speaker check tone before publishing — but it removes the bottleneck of writing every appeal five times. Draft in English, translate with AI, review with humans, publish.
A starter stack for a two-person NGO
- Drafting & translation: Claude or ChatGPT free tier — sufficient for most comms.
- Voice-brief document: a saved paragraph describing your org, your community, and the words you refuse. Paste into every new conversation.
- Meeting notes → donor updates: record with consent, transcribe with Whisper, ask AI to draft the update, edit yourself.
- Grant applications: AI drafts structure; a human writes the story.
The Ubuntu test
Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu — a person is a person through other people. Before you publish anything AI helped write, ask: would the person I'm describing recognise themselves in this sentence and feel dignified? If not, rewrite — no matter how efficient the draft was.
